October arrived with me reading an advert in The Times for a cheap week in Italy. £199 per person for a self catering apartment in San Giminiano (near Florence) including car hire and air travel. Too good to be true, so when Norman phoned up to book, he was told that the apartment had already been booked but there was another larger apartment available for £275 per person, we still jumped at it. Before we went, on the first Sunday we popped in on Christopher in South London and made sure that he was O.K. So on the 15th at 3am we left to drive to Gatwick to catch the 7.00am flight to Pisa. Everything went very smoothly with wheelchairs etc. and we were given a Fiat Punto, which Norman tells me was a diesel, so more economical, and we drove to our apartment in San Giminiano.

Easy directions, wonderful apartment, with a double bedroom, two bathrooms, a huge lounge and a kitchen-diner. It had a veranda overlooking the swimming pool and tennis court and a superb view over Tuscany hills and Cypress trees.
It was also only 200 metres outside the village walls. The weather was great for the first 3 days but then the rain closed in. However we went to Siena and Florence and even made a dash to the seaside at Marina di Cecina.

When we got back to Blighty, we were soon back into the throw of things and on Tuesday, the 25th, went to the Croft Hall to see a play – The Garden of Llangoed, put on by the Watermill Theatre ( ) and sent around the local towns and villages. A great evening. Then on the Thursday we went to the Rotary Club of Newbury’s magic night where we were royally entertained and fed. John Winchcombe is a real magician.
